M.L.S. Expands to Montreal
The club, which will be operated by Joey Saputo, the owner of the minor league Montreal Impact, will become the third Canadian club in the league when it begins play in 2012. Toronto entered the league in 2006 (beginning play in 2007), and the Vancouver Whitecaps will join M.L.S. next year, with the Portland Timbers.
Saputo has been seeking an M.L.S. team for the past several years.
Without tipping its hand, the Impact sent out invitations via e-mail message saying it would make a “major announcement.” That announcement was later duplicated when M.L.S. sent out an e-mail message later on Thursday.
