MLB Starts New Awards With Fans, Media, Front Office, SABR, And Former Players Voting

For some time now there has been a steady debate over how the baseball writers come up with the winners for the postseason awards. No matter the year, there’s a debate over the awards such as MVPs, Cy Young winners, and Rookies of the Year. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) has always said, “We didn’t declare these to be the be-all-end-all of awards” and pointed to MLB for making them as such.
While it’s too soon to tell, maybe that could change, albeit with a heavy dash of marketing on the side.

Today MLB.com and the club websites offer up the league-sanctioned 2015 Esurance MLB Awards, an expanded awards program that recognizes Major League players, baseball fans and memorable moments in unique categories and not limited by league affiliation. Before you wonder whether we’ll simply run into something akin to All-Star Game voting, there are five groups members of the baseball media, club front-office personnel, former MLB players and Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) members that will account 20 percent each of the total.
